Kanex Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Extinguishers

(AVD Technology)

Advanced Fire Protection to Prevent Heat Propagation

Kanex Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Extinguishers are specifically designed to address the unique fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. While lithium-ion batteries offer high energy output in a compact and lightweight form compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, they are highly sensitive to heat and inherently flammable. Excessive temperatures can accelerate battery degradation, and in the event of failure, lithium-ion battery packs may ignite violently, leading to rapid fire spread and severe damage.

Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD) Fire Extinguisher

The AVD fire extinguisher agent is an aqueous dispersion of chemically exfoliated vermiculite, engineered specifically for lithium-ion battery fires. When discharged as a fine mist, the AVD agent effectively suppresses the fire while preventing the spread of heat and thermal runaway. Kanex Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Extinguishers using AVD technology provide highly effective fire control by forming a protective fire barrier. The vermiculite particles within the mist settle on the surface of the burning battery, creating a thin coating over the fire source. This coating rapidly dries and forms a non-flammable oxygen-blocking layer between the fuel and the surrounding atmosphere. Due to the overlapping, plate-like structure of the vermiculite particles, the barrier binds together to stop re-ignition. Simultaneously, the evaporation of water in the AVD agent cools the fuel source, allowing the vermiculite layer to build up and bringing the fire safely under control.

Why lithium-ion batteries catch fire, let’s look

Lithium-ion batteries store a large amount of energy in a compact space. While this makes them highly efficient, it also increases the risk of fire if something goes wrong. The most common causes of lithium-ion battery fires include:

  • Manufacturing Defects

Defects introduced during the manufacturing process—such as contamination, damaged separators, or internal short circuits—can cause uneven current flow inside the battery. These faults may remain hidden until the battery is charged, discharged, or exposed to heat, eventually leading to overheating and thermal runaway.

  • Design Flaws

Poor battery design, inadequate insulation, insufficient thermal management, or lack of safety features can significantly increase fire risk. If a battery pack is unable to dissipate heat effectively or isolate failing cells, a single cell failure can rapidly spread to adjacent cells, causing ignition.

  • Abnormal or Improper Usage

Improper handling such as overcharging, deep discharging, physical damage, exposure to high temperatures, or using batteries beyond their intended application can destabilize the internal chemistry. Mechanical impact, crushing, or puncturing of the battery can also trigger internal short circuits, resulting in fire.

  • Charger-Related Issues

Using incompatible, low-quality, or faulty chargers can cause overvoltage, overheating, or uneven charging. Chargers without proper safety cut-offs may force excess energy into the battery, increasing internal pressure and temperature, which can ultimately lead to ignition.

What to Do When a Lithium-Ion Battery Catches Fire

Lithium-ion battery fires are particularly dangerous due to their tendency to undergo thermal runaway, a condition where the battery continues to generate heat even after the flames appear to be extinguished. These fires can reignite minutes or even hours later.
The fundamental principle in managing lithium-ion battery fires is intensive cooling.
While some extinguishing agents may temporarily suppress visible flames by smothering the fire, they often fail to deliver sufficient cooling to stop the chemical reaction within the battery cells. Without adequate heat reduction, the battery can reignite.

Effective lithium-ion fire suppression focuses on:
⮞ Rapid heat absorption
⮞ Preventing heat propagation to nearby cells
⮞ Creating a stable barrier to stop re-ignition
This is why specialized solutions, such as AVD (Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion) fire extinguishers, are recommended, as they provide both cooling and thermal insulation, helping to bring the fire under control safely and effectively.
